D Division East round-up – week 10: Barnstaple & Pilton upset form book

SHOBROOKE Park dropped out of the top two in the D Division East following a 22-run defeat away to Barnstaple & Pilton.
Bradninch & Kentisbeare, who were third in the rankings, traded places with Shobrooke after defeating Ottery St Mary.
There is not a lot in it though as only a point separates the two teams chasing leaders Upottery in the promotion race.
James Roe (36) and James Poole (27) made runs at the top of the order for B&P, but it was Matt Newton (48) and Andrew Fewings (16) whose later runs got B&P up to 184 for eight.
Joe Harris (4-36) took the bowling pat on the back for Shobrooke. Fergus Campey (2-25) offered little to hit.
Shobrooke were in a promising place at 94 for two with Chris Simpson (38) one of those already out.
It was a different story at 102 for five after a going over from B&P captain Lee Cole (3-21).
Fergus Campey survived long enough to reach 50, but only Andy Steer, the brother of Sandford’s hat-trick hero Pete, made double figures (15) as Shobrooke tumbled to 162 all out.
BRADNINCH & Kentisbeare 2nd XI thrashed Ottery St Mary 2nd XI by 10 wickets in a low-scoring affair.
Ottery stumbled at the start – they were 15 for three – recovered to 62 for four then tumbled to 91 all out. There were more extras (19) than any individual batsman scored.
Ankit Badwal (3-17) led B&K’s bowling effort, aided and abetted by James Mills and Sam Franks with two wickets each.
Bradninch & Kentisbeare openers Nick Bayly (65no) and Richard Norman (13no) only needed 12.3 overs to claim the win that moved B&K up to second in the table.
TOPSHAM St James cut the leeway between themselves and safety in the D West to 13 points with a three-wicket win over Clyst Hydon.
Keith Herselman (61) booked Hydon’s best score in a total of 187 for four. He put on 49 with Haris Reshi (25) and 69 with Ian Sutton (35).
Graham Trude added 30 not out off 34 balls in the dying stages.
Topsham bowlers Declan Wardell (1-18), Mustavi Emdad (1-29) and Brian Jeary (1-30) all made Hydon work hard for their runs.
Topsham chased down the runs with more than three overs to go without to many anxious moments, despite the efforts of Jeff Sanders (3-28) and Ian Sutton (2-31) to slow them down.
Wardell (29) and Jon Sapwell (33) laid the foundations for TSJ’s chase, 42 extras helped hugely and Emdad (21no) finished things off.
WHIMPLE kept D East leaders Upottery in their sights with a thumping eight-wicket win over North Devon 2nd XI.
North Devon were bowled out for 139 in the 33rd over with Richard Clarke (38) making more than anyone else. Twenty-seven extras were next best.
Fergus Campbell (0-8) and Freddie Fenner (1-23) pinned North Devon down with the new ball. Andrew Codling (2-27), Luke Phillips (2-17) and Nathan Bright (5-54) bowled them out once the shine had gone.
Whimple lost wickets at 33 and 80 on their way to victory.
Codling (54no) put on 47 with Bright (33) and was there at the end with Campbell (11no).
Defeat dropped North Devon down to sixth in the table.
