38 clubs across Devon have embraced a Devon & Cornwall Police initiative aimed at deterring equipment theft across the region.
Following a recent spate of thefts affecting sports clubs in the region, Devon & Cornwall Police has enacted its We Don’t Buy Crime initiative, which targets acquisitive crime & associated harm, to help prevent such criminal activity. They have coordinated a subsidised offer from DeterTech for the provision of SmartWater forensic property marking and signage packages to cricket clubs.
DeterTech have been instrumental in backing this effective initiative, and many clubs across the region have snapped up the subsidised offer, with deployment currently in progress.
"SmartWater Crime Prevention is a game-changer for cricket clubs, and we are pleased that so many clubs are joining our initiative," says D&C Police Crime Prevention Tactical Advisor, Hannah Denton. "Over recent months, across Devon & Cornwall, there has been a substantial increase in break-ins to sports centres, with ride-on mowers, chainsaws, tractors and fuel amongst the equipment being targeted."
In response to this spate of thefts, D&C Police Crime Prevention Team have worked with DeterTech to utilise their SmartWater business packs. "SmartWater is a powerful deterrent, and clubs that display SmartWater warning signs send a clear message that the ground is protected. We know cricket clubs rely on volunteers to raise funds and keep the club running, and any theft of equipment not only costs money but has a massive impact on everyone's morale."
The Devon Cricket Foundation partnered with D&C Police over the summer to promote the initiative amongst the county's cricket clubs, with Funding & Facilities Manager Nick Goodliffe having pushed hard to get as many clubs signed up for the subsidised packs. "It's been a real pleasure to work so proactively with the D&C Police crime prevention team led by crime reduction Sergeant, Chris Chaloner," says Nick. "By adopting this crime prevention tool, cricket clubs can give more focus to what matters most: growing the game, developing facilities, and providing a safe and welcoming place for everyone to enjoy cricket. Huge thanks should go to DeterTech for making these kits available to clubs at an affordable price."
Deliveries of the SmartWater kits to Devon clubs who signed up for the initiative have now begun. "We have started to visit the clubs that have signed up and bought the kits to show and explain how they work," says Hannah. "It has been well received. We have been privileged to visit unique clubs in amazing surroundings, beautiful countryside, seaside views, deep valleys and have always been made to feel welcome."
