Newton Abbot College finished runners-up in the National Table Cricket finals on Disability Cricket Day at Lord's.

Having emerged victorious at the County and Regional Table Cricket finals earlier in the year, Newton Abbot College secured their place at the home of cricket alongside 11 other schools from across the country to compete in the National Table Cricket finals.

For the first time in the competition's history, National Finals Day took place as part of Disability Cricket Day, the biggest ever one-off showcase of disability cricket hosted by the MCC, ECB and Lord’s Taverners, which saw all formats of disability cricket on display from grassroots to elite level.

Newton Abbot College won all of their group games on their way to the final on the day, but fell short against a strong Wirral Grammar by 43 runs.

"Second best in the country is a great achievement," said Newton Abbot College PE Teacher, Jonathan Colegate. "The students performed excellently throughout all the competition stages and were an absolute pleasure to take on such a prestigious event. We go again next year!"

Table cricket is a fully inclusive, adapted version of the game aimed at young people living with a wide range of learning and physical disabilities played on a table tennis table.

Many young people with a disability have limited opportunities to participate in sport, but table cricket provides an incredible opportunity for them to make new friends and develop life skills such as confidence and independence, while also helping them understand the importance of leadership and teamwork in competitive environments.
