NORTH Devon CC defeated Bideford by seven wickets in the final of the North Devon Twenty20 Cup in Sunday’s final at Westleigh.
Bideford who won the toss and batted, put on 100 in the first nine overs with Jack Ford (68) and Oli Hannam (37) going well, Once they were dismissed, North Devon fought back to restrict their opponents to 193 for seven.
James Ford rolled back the years with a 15-ball 25, and Marcus Bulled chipped in with 21, as Bideford set a challenging total.
Fred King, and James Tyson both took a couple of wickets for the Instow outfit.
Jay Rothery (39) and Fred King (31) set about the chase with gusto, putting on 50 in just 20 balls, effectively breaking the back of the chase.
James Tyson got 26 before Jack Moore (56no) and Rueben Windley (36no) saw North Devon reach their target with 20 balls in hand.
North Devon skipper Jonny Green lifted the trophy for the third consecutive time. His team will already be considered favourites for next year’s competition.
North Devon got to the final with a 11-run morning win over a below-strength Braunton side.
North Devon racked-up an impressive 222 for four. Moore, Tyson, and Jack Popham all scored 30-plus, but it was Windley who took the plaudits by scoring 92 not out from 34 balls.
Having been dropped on two on the boundary by James Lake, Windley proceeded to clear it 12 times!
A highlight for Braunton came when Devon over-50s’ captain Steve Moore had son Jack Moore stumped by Sam Bithell. All three were team-mates at Barnstaple & Pilton when your correspondent was director of cricket there.
Braunton struggled against the North Devon's bowlers. Jack Popham took three for 18 and there were a couple each for Will Popham, and James Tyson.
Veteran Jon Baglow (29no) took Braunton past 100. Jack Moore returned the compliment by having dad and last man Steve lbw as Braunton were all out for 106.
Bideford took on Barnstaple & Pilton in the second semi-final and won it by 153 runs.
Jack Ford (83) and Oliver Hannam (87) set the tone with an opening partnership of 153. They both hit 10 fours and six sixes. Alex Hannam kept the momentum going with a rapid 43 as Bideford amassed 246 for three.
Skipper Lee Cole tried Barnstaple & Pilton bowlers – and probably wished mystery spinner Tony Gilbert was playing rather than spectating. Freddie Norton took two of the three wickets to fall.
Bideford skipper Jack Ford used six bowlers, all of whom took at least one wicket, as a demoralised Barnstaple & Pilton were dismissed for 93 in 17 overs.
Special mention goes to Graham Moore and Alec Pickersgill, who officiated all day, as well as Gary Hudson for scoring each game.
