Brixham CC have re-established their junior section by entering the 2026 Devon Girls' Cricket League.

In doing so, they have become the first club in Devon to have a female team as the only recognised side in their junior section.

The club had noticed over the last few years, whilst running the All Stars and Dynamos programmes, that the ratio of boys to girls was almost 1:1, and when the offer came up over winter to set up a girls’ team using the Dynamos programme, they jumped at the opportunity.

They signed up for the winter Dynamos Activation programme that the ECB offered during the winter, provided training sessions specifically for the girls, with the team then going on to attend the DCF Glow in the Dark Cricket Festival, their first ever fixture as a team! The team enjoyed the training so much that they carried on after the Dynamos Activation finished.

Speaking on becoming a county first, manager Sean McGhee said:

"When we were told that Brixham is the first club to enter a girls’ league team before establishing a mixed junior team, it is something we are all very proud of.

"The team we have at the moment are fantastic. We have a core group of girls who are amazing to coach, and it is a real privilege to do so. The girls come to every training session with smiles on their faces and a real willingness to learn and improve.

"From a coach's perspective, you couldn't ask for anymore and we all really enjoy coaching them every week! We definitely have some future cricket stars in our team!"

Sean admits Brixham CC are fortunate to have several experienced female coaches who have been volunteering for a number of years, including the Devon Cricket Foundation's South Devon Community Cricket Coach, Hollie Perkin, who have brought both their cricket knowledge and enthusiasm with them.

"We also have some girls who help with the coaching and will be looking to complete their coaching courses when they are old enough," added Sean. "It is great for us as a club to have such a strong female coaching team."

Brixham CC are now excited to be playing their first competitive games against other clubs this summer

"This is a great achievement for the girls' game in Devon and shows how far the game has come in the last five seasons," said DCF's Women & Girls Development Officer, Ann-Marie Presswell. "I didn't think that a club's first team being a girls' team would come this soon. It reflects the positivity and drive to build parity in the game, and we cannot thank all the volunteers who work hard to help achieve that enough."
