DEVON’S pursuit of a spot in the Dojo T20 Cup resumes on Sunday with a double-header against Herefordshire at Blundell’s School in Tiverton.

Devon went to the top of the group in the last round of fixtures with back-to-back wins over Dorset at Wimborne. They are a point ahead of Wiltshire.

Three teams qualify from each five-team pool for the Super12 round and Devon could be one of them if results go their way on Sunday. If Devon defeat Herefordshire at least once, and Cornwall don’t beat Dorset twice at St Austell, they cannot finish outside the top three.

If results are less than favourable, qualification will rest on the outcome of the double date with Cornwall at Werrington on July 5.

Tim Western, Devon CCC’s performance director, feels the squad is in a good place to push for the Super12s.

“We have built some real momentum and confidence after two good wins over Dorset, but we’re keeping our feet firmly on the ground,” said Western.

“If we can back that up with another two wins, we’ll head into the last group fixtures exactly where we want to be.

“The squad is working hard to be better, driving higher standards and belief is growing.

'Herefordshire will undoubtedly test us. They have quality players and are developing under Sean Hooper (ex-Cornwall player). But we’re in a good place after the first two rounds.”

Having a settled side is something Western believes is contributing to performances so far.

Jamie Matravers (45.33), Ben Privett (35), Seb Linnitt (25.50) and Sam Read (21.33) are all averaging more than 20 with the bat.

Read, six wickets at less than 10 runs each, heads the bowling stats in front of Privett (5@15), Harry Passenger (4@16) then Harvey and Matt Whalley.

Said Western: 'It is pleasing that the performances are being spread around the team. This shows our depth and the number of options available to the captain.”

Captain Lawrence Walker, who missed the first two rounds due to a broken thumb, is back in the side after receiving a medical all-clear to play. However, caretaker Callum Harvey will carry on as skipper out on the field.

Walker’s return at the expense of Jon Triner is the only change to the side that beat Dorset twice over. Luke Medlock and Charlie Ward, who dropped out of the double-header to play for club side Paignton, have been unable to get back into the team
