Devon delay naming side for Twenty20 opener against Wiltshire due to injury and availability issues

DEVON return to Instow on Sunday for a Twenty20 double-header against Wiltshire (11am).
The last time Devon played Twenty20 cricket in the Sandhills was when they lost twice in a day to Herefordshire back in 2022.
Devon have had a lean time in Twenty20 cricket in recent seasons. They have not got past the group stages since 2018, when they reached the semi-final stage.
Three wins in eight starts in 2025 was an improvement. Performance director Tim Western has identified the problem areas and said the current team knows what’s required to qualify for the knockout stages.
“To improve as a Twenty20 side we need to be very disciplined in the tactics we employ when bowling,” said Western.
“We need to make best use of the middle overs after a positive power play and keep wickets in hand, which has been an issue in the 50-over format as well.
Small wins
“Twenty20 cricket can change very quickly and so we need to win the small moments. Then the result will take care of itself.”
Devon have delayed selection for the game to give time for injury and availability issues to be resolved.
Definitely out is captain and hard-hitting batter Lawrence Walker, who is recovering from a broken thumb. Callum Harvey will lead the side in Walker’s absence.
Top of the doubtful list is batter Dan Pyle (hamstring), followed by opener Ben Privett (foot).
Western is waiting for confirmation from Gloucestershire that they will release bowling all-rounder James Matravers for the Twenty20 competition.
Matravers, an academy scholar at Nevil Road, started his cricket career with Honiton before being talent spotted by Gloucestershire.
