Devon Disability Return With Victory Over Somerset

Devon Disability marked their first game since the COVID-19 pandemic with victory over Somerset at Budleigh Salterton CC on Sunday.

A mixed disability side represented Devon at the Holt this weekend, defeating neighbours Somerset by 40 runs in a game of pairs cricket.

Damian Price (left) says Sunday's game was a big milestone for the team.

"Playing our first game in such a long time is a huge milestone for us," says Damian Price, who leads the Devon Disability programme. "We have been working really hard for a number of years to get to this point, and this is a huge first step in the right direction."

The squad was primarily comprised of participants from across the four Super 1s hubs in Devon. Super 1s is a programme funded by the Lord's Taverners in partnership with the Devon Cricket Foundation to establish and sustain opportunities within cricket for people who have a disability. The four Devon Super 1s hubs are based in Barnstaple, Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay.

Sunday's match was hosted by Budleigh Salterton CC, who have been a Disability Champion Club since 2023. The Disability Cricket Champion Club Programme supports cricket clubs through guidance, resources and equipment to enable them to welcome individuals with additional needs and varying abilities, supporting them to play, follow, officiate and volunteer.

Devon Disability are due to travel to Cornwall on 7 September for a softball pairs festival, which Damian says would be another big milestone: "Travelling to another county to play is now the next step in our journey. Player availability is always a challenge, and we are always looking for more players to join, so anyone interested in joining us is more than welcome to sign up!"
