Filleigh defeat Kelseymen to carry off North Devon League Cup

Justin Saker – runs for Filleigh in NDL Cup final win over Braunton Kelseymen

IT is all over bar the celebrating and commiserating in the North Devon League as outcomes in Divisions Two and Three and the League Cup have been settled.

The League Cup final between Filleigh and Braunton Kelseymen was played at Hatherleigh. Filleigh skipper Kevin Toze won the toss and asked Braunton to bat. He was possibly regretting that decision as rival skipper Andy Norman (53) put on 107 for the first wicket with fellow opener Sam Reddick (49).

A quick 27 from Mark Thomas took the score to 147 for three. Toze, having used six bowlers, gave the ball to Chris Gosney, who changed the course of the innings with a spell of four for eight in four overs. Braunton reached a 40-over score of 169 for eight. Twenty-seven extras helped the cause.

Filleigh got the runs with seven overs to go and five wickets in hand.

After Chris Cullen was bowled by Norman early on, Ed Wilson (23) Justin Saker (35) and Simon Prideaux (21) took the score to 115 for five. Albert Buckley (40no) and Matthew Boundy (17no) shared an unbroken stand of 58 to see the Deer Park men home aided by 30 extras.

Baille Braund did his best with the ball by taking four for 35 off his eight overs.

Jack Ford scored 106 not out for Bideford in the win over Lynton that was enough to clinch the Division Two title.

Victoria Park travelled to Newton Tracey II needing a win to secure the Division Three title. Captain Dave Branch won the toss, and invited the hosts to bat. He used six bowlers, all of whom took at least one wicket. Ian Brown’s (3-4 off five) had the stand-out figures as Newton were all out for 86 in 30 overs

There was a slight wobble at the start of Viccy Park’s reply as they lost two wickets for 16 runs. That was as good as it got for Newton as Harry Rainsford (42no) and Brown (41no) saw the Park home with 20 overs to spare with an unbeaten stand of 76.

The previous day Newton went to Hatherleigh and lost an entertaining encounter against their 2nd XI counterparts.

Newton batted first and amassed an all-out score of 234. Kieran Soper led the way with 104. Owen Johns took four for 40 for Hatherleigh.

Achilles Browne hit a quickfire 101 and found support from Cam Rowlands (55) as Hatherleigh won by two wickets. Domi Moore (3-56) was the most successful Newton bowler.
