After a week's break, we were treated to 14 games of cricket being played on Sunday. As you would expect, they were not short of runs and wickets, so, here is what happened on Super 8s Sunday.

Super 8s Pairs

Many players got their first taste of hardball last weekend, as the pairs league continues to play a key role in helping softball cricketers make the transition to hardball.

Over in the east, Ottery St Mary played host to Clyst St George, with Teignmouth and Shaldon CC unable to field a side together. Ottery kicked off the day, beating Clyst St George by 95 runs, with a solid batting performance from Eva Bowring.

In the west, Exwick conceded, leaving host’s Exmouth and Hatherleigh to battle it out. Hatherleigh displayed a fine batting performance, boasting a score of 102. However, Exmouth came back stronger, finishing the game with a score of 157 without losing a wicket.

Super 8s Plate

Out in East Devon, Cullompton welcomed Whimple and Bradninch & Kentisbeare for the day. Whimple took on Cullompton for the opening game, and bowled the hosts all out for 83 runs, led by Nat Sparks taking 3 wickets. Despite a few early wickets for Whimple, Nat McMurren (27) and Sophie Bomby (22) led the team to victory in just 11 overs.

Whimple then faced Bradninch, being put into bat first, they scored an impressive 132 runs off their 16 overs, Holly Walsh scoring 39 of them. Bradninch struggled to get going, ending their innings with 79 runs, handing Whimple a 53 run victory. Finally, Bradninch took on Cullompton, electing to field first, the side bowled Cullompton all out for 78 runs. Colette Bamber led the charge, taking her second 5iver of the season! Bradninch’s opener Emma Farley (24*) helped the side to glory, winning by three wickets.

In the West Devon league, Stoke Gabriel hosted Bovey Tracey and Cornwood. The hosts took on Bovey for the first game, batting first and scoring 114 runs, with S Tyler top scoring with 33 runs. Bovey gave a good chase, but fell 11 runs at the end. Next up, Cornwood faced Bovey, electing to bat, with help from K Frost (33*) and H Simpson (30*) the side set a score of 130 overs to chase. Bovey got a good start, but after some early wickets, the side only managed to score 91 runs.

The day wrapped up with a thrilling, high-scoring encounter as Cornwood took on Stoke Gabriel. Batting first, Cornwood posted an impressive total of 142 runs. Stoke Gabriel launched a determined chase and came tantalizingly close to victory, but ultimately fell 22 runs short.

Super 8s Trophy

Clyst St George faced Exeter for their first game in the East league. Exeter sent the hosts into bat, Clyst scored 92 runs with two batters, C Pym and A West, retiring. Exeter replied with a solid chase, scoring 93 runs in 12 overs. In the next game, Exeter played Taunton Deane. Taunton put themselves into bat, scoring 119, with Harriet Kelly finishing her innings on 43*. Exeter once again chased down the score in just 15 overs, winning both their games of the day.

Finally, Taunton took on the hosts, Clyst St George, setting a score of 162 runs, despite Maise Cleveland’s three wickets. Clyst pushed hard, with everybody contributing runs, but fell 71 runs short.

Last but not least, Plymouth Women XI welcomed Plymouth 19’s and Bovey Tracey. Bovey faced Plymouth Women, batting first and scoring an immense 140 runs. However, despite the big chase, Plymouth chased down the score in just 14 overs, winning by three wickets. Plymouth U19s took on Bovey Tracey for the next game. Bovey batting first again, scoring 169 runs, with Holly Evans and Monica Gair retiring. Plymouth’s Melissa Banks (47*) and Jemima Johnson (36*) helped the side to secure a one wicket win.

Finally, it was Plymouth vs Plymouth. The ladies side batted first, setting a total of 184 to chase, with Lily Innes scoring a half century. The U19s fought hard, Lucy Hulbert (28) and Rosie Johnson (24) added to the total, but eventually fell 21 runs short.

Next week the 35 league is back in action with matches in all three divisions.
