Morris poised for Devon return after four years away
FORMER Budleigh Salterton paceman Charlie Morris could make a surprise return for Devon in Sunday’s Unicorns Trophy semi-final against Herefordshire at Sidmouth.
Morris last played for Devon in 2012 before signing for Worcestershire – and hasn’t been seen since.
He has been fighting injuries this season and played more 2nd XI cricket than First Class. In addition, he has been playing for Bridgnorth in the Birmingham League and had a six-wicket haul for them two weeks ago.
Devon are waiting for fitness clearance on Morris before naming the side to face Herefordshire. If fit he will play.
Seamer Scott Barlow keeps his place in the side having answered an SoS to help out against Cumberland in the last round.
“He was our best bowler at Barrow, so he has to stay in,” said director of cricket Keith Donohue.
Barlow had made himself unavailable for Devon after moving to London to live and work, but couldn’t say no to a recall.
“When your county asks you to play in a quarter-final there is only one answer,” said Barlow.
Exeter’s Somerset and England U19 all-rounder Ben Green is named in the squad. Like Morris he has fitness issues.
Dual-registered Ryan Stevenson won’t be released by Hampshire as he has a back injury.
Jack Popham, the North Devon CC quickie attached to Gloucestershire, is close to bowling fitness again, but not close enough to get in the 13.
Captain Rob Woodman was at a wedding when the last round was played and missed the match. He returns.
Spinners Charlie Miles and Jake Finney, who played in the win over Cumberland, have been dropped.
Donohue’s selection overview was: “We are not that far off full strength.
“Yes we have some fitness issues, but with the players we have available I am not overly concerned.”
The other semi-final is between Dorset and Staffordshire at Bournemouth Sports Club.
