Harry Everett rounds up the first round of the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup, the intermediate T20 competition in Devon.
Run machine James Mitcham could not take his 45-over form of five consecutive Saturday league hundreds (followed by a mere 95) into the shorter format, he fell for just eight as Ottery St Mary restricted Upottery 1s to just 101 in the rain reduced 18 overs. Freddie Eul-Barker took 3-2 off two overs as only Jack Larcombe (38) passed 13. Ottery needed former Feniton man John Buckland’s 27 not out to get them over the line with an over to spare after a lower-middle order collapse.
Barton beat Ivybridge by three wickets in a low-scoring affair where Finley Last, opening in the chase, was the highest scorer in the game with 37.
Cornwood 2s chased Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough’s meagre 92-8 with few worries to win by eight wickets. Wickets were spread around before twin 33s from Ewan Grewal and Finn Torley got the job done in just 10.3 overs.
Budleigh Salterton posted 141 all out as they only lasted 18.5 overs, veteran Chris Ferro taking 3-4 in just 2.5 overs as Clyst St George seemed to be on top. But the wet start to the season continued to make batting tricky, Clyst managing just 90 all out in reply.
An even lower-scoring game, the lowest of the round came in South East Devon, Steve Batey and Max Felgate taking 3-fers for Uplyme as Seaton were all out for 65. Uplyme squeaked across the line thanks to 27 from Daniel Magee whilst no one else joined him in double figures, the Muffinmen winning by three wickets.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the highest score came from Stoke Gabriel, 251-2 they racked up! A Louis Kimber-esque effort from Justin Pringle who scored 128 off 48 (with seventeen sixes) after 48 and 51 from Abhishek Anand and Michael Meech. No one passed 26 in Plymouth’s reply of 98 all out, Dan Bullock and James Player taking three poles each in this one-sided affair.
Charging back up through the divisions and cup now are Filleigh who beat Hatherleigh 2s by 43 runs. Skipper Justin Saker scored 55 and Louis Roberts 54 in their 152-6, Hatherleigh finishing 109-8 in this 19/19.
After a cracker between their first teams, Sandford 2s this time beat Bradninch 2s by one run. Home skipper Shaun Hawkins opened with 37 as Ford reached 145-6 off their 18 (another rain-reduced match). This did not seem quite enough as away opener Sam Franks (55*) started well, but he could not get enough strike in the chase as the middle-order collapsed and he ran out of partners and time.
