FRIENDS, ex-team-mates and old adversaries will be digging out their cricket gear to remember former player, umpire and administrator David Gambie, who died last year. He was 78.

Gambie played cricket for Exeter St Thomas, Exeter CC and finally Exeter St James (later re-named Topsham St James) across four decades. As a left-arm bowler he was good enough to play for Devon Seniors and the England over-70s’ side.

Umpiring was a natural progression for Gambie, who stood on the Devon League panel as well as for club side Topsham SJ.

Players knew they had to be on their best behaviour when Gambie was umpiring: at various times he was the league’s discipline secretary, vice-chairman and chairman.

Gambie’s services to Exeter CC and Topsham CC earned him life-memberships of each – a rare accolade.

Gambie worked for many years as a financial advisor for Exeter law firm Gilbert Stephens.

Sunday, August 9 has been set aside by Topsham SJ for the David Gambie Memorial Match, which will be between a Club XI and Devon Seniors.

The 40-over match will be held on the University of Exeter Sports Ground in Topsham with a 1.30pm start.

The St James’ team will include some past, as well as present, players. There are still some spaces in the St James’ team. Any player interested in one of them should contact TSJ secretary Sheila Harding on 07816 665503.
