SANDFORD cricketers Jackson Thompson and Jamie Palmer made a winning start to international cricket on their England Counties over-40s’ debuts against India.

Thompson opened the batting and made a rapid 56 off 41 balls towards England’s 45-over score of 287 for nine. Thompson shared an opening stand of 87 with Justin Bishop at High Wycombe CC, which hosted the game.

Palmer, who went in at number 11 in the last over, was two not out when time was called.Jamie Palmer runs in to bowl

Thompson’s off-spin wasn’t required when India batted, but Palmer’s seam bowling was. He claimed the wicket of Pankaj Dhuldyoye thanks to a stumping.

India were bowled out in the penultimate over for 242, which gave England a convincing win by 45 runs.

Palmer and Thompson were talent spotted by the England Seniors management after responding to an advert appealing for trialists.

Thompson, a former professional with Middlesex and Gloucestershire said playing for England had been a dream he never thought he would realise after leaving the First-Class game in 2010

“To had have this opportunity later in life makes it even more special, exciting and rewarding,” said Thompson.

SUREAL

“The experience was surreal especially during the anthems.

“It was great to be part of the set-up and contribute towards an England win. It was a real good team effort on a very hot day.

“It was also pleasing to see Jamie bowl his heart out and put in a performance.”

Palmer said he applied for a trial more in hope than expectation.

“It was a really enjoyable day. I am glad that I bowled well. I hit good areas on a very flat pitch and on another day could have had a few more wickets.

“Hopefully this is the start of a few more games for the over 40s.

“Also, really pleased for Jacko; a typical hard-hit half-century from him.”

England have another one-day international against India at Hammerwich CC in Staffordshire on Thursday. Thompson is in the side for that game.
