BARTON skipper Steve Lewis did not hold back in the aftermath of his side’s150-run pasting at Seaton.
The B Division new boys galloped along to 296 for eight – Damian Baxter scoring 105 at run-a-ball rate – then bowled-out Barton for 146.
Whatever Barton did – batting, bowling or fielding – was not up to the standards Lewis expects from the team.
“You can’t compete at any level conceding 64 extras – and fielding at the levels we did,” said Lewis.
“Their middle to lower order batted superbly and took advantage of the gifts we kept giving all day.
“It’s hard to bowl at Seaton economically, being such a nice pitch. I would be very angry if I was a bowler checking my figures because they didn’t get the help from the fielders.
“Batting wise, no one could support Basit enough. There were two very good opening spells from them, which we didn’t have an answer for.”
Tim Doulton, the Seaton captain, was in a far better place looking back at the match. Sitting six points clear at the tp of the table helped!
“It was a huge result for us against a strong side, with a good spin attack," said Doultlon.
“Damian Baxter went about the situation perfectly when were in a tricky period at 88 for four. To reach 296 from there was excellent to watch, alongside valuable contributions around him.
“A ruthless bowling performance was still required, particularly with the strength in their opening batters. Fortunately, this was executed and we took our chances.”
Baxter shared in stands of 58 with Sam Goodier (22), 61 with Doulton (20) and 71 with Ben Morgan (9) as the scoreline mounted. Nick Watkin (2-29) had the only bowling figures to cope with scrutiny.
Barton opener Muhammad Basit (71) saw seven partners come and go before Sam Dormer (3-37) prised him out. By then Doulton (4-40) and Morgan (3-35) had done irreparable damage.
