Brockman Cup final: Friday July 18, 1958

BARTON defeated holders Chelston to win the Brockman Cup.

Batting first in Friday’s match. Barton only scored 29 runs in the first 10 overs. Then some adventurous batting from Bill Cassells (15no), M Rowe (18) and G Cox (13) took the score to 88 for eight wickets.

This was far from being an impossible target for Chelston, particularly as Barton made some bad fielding mistakes and lost key bowler Ernie Knapman through a fall in the 11thover.

But Chelston did not hit out soon enough and despite a bright knock of 30 by Paul Hawkins could only score 81 for four in their 20 overs to lose by seven runs.

The cup was presented to Barton skipper Cassells by Mrs E E Haggard, president of the competition, who also presented medals to the two teams.
