North Devon bat steadily for victory

Last weekend saw the second round of matches in the Devon Women's League and in the 1st Division North Devon took on Topsham at home, whilst in Division 2, Bradnich were hosts to Plymouth, who commented on what a welcomng and friendly club Bradnich were. 

At Instow, North Devon, Topsham, who were a player short,  won the toss and elected to bat. With some excellent bowling from North Devon (Lauren Bowden 7 overs, 2 maidens, 9 runs and 4 wickets), Topsham never had the chance to build a partnership and with the top score from JoJo Baylis being 20, Topsham ended their innings on 73 runs. 

North Devon came in to bat and despite losing an early and then regular wickets, they knocked off the runs required in 18.5 overs, with a top score of 24 from Carmen Clements. Topsham have started the season with two challenging games away and now look ahead to hosting Hatherleigh on 2nd June. 

 

In Division 2, Bradnich won the toss and elected to field. Sharing the wickets around, Bradnich regularly took wickets, but Plymouth saw an excellent innings from Gill Northey, who carried her bat to score 38 not out. Plymouth ended their innings on 113 for 8. 

Plymouth started the defence of their total well and within five overs, Bradnich were 5 for 2. With the arrival of Megan Acton at the crease (32) and later Abby Hayes (24 no), Bradnich, who are new entrants to the hardball league this season, were able to finally post 95 all out. Plymouth displayed some excellent bowling, with stand out performances from Molly Marsh (5.4 overs, 9 runs, 1 maiden, 2 wickets) and Connie Watson (7 overs, 1 maiden, 17 runs, 3 wickets). Plymouth look to contiune their winning start to the season when they play away to Paignton, also new to the hardball league, later this month.
