DEVON U11s were out-batted, out-bowled and out-fielded by Gwent as they tumbled to their first defeat of the season – 12 run at the hands of Gwent.
Going into the game at Shaldon, Devon were undefeated in their first five games.
Gwent posted 144 for seven on a dampish wicket, a better total than looked likely when they were 29 for four.
At 56 for none Devon were well on course and 94 for two looked promising too.
Devon’s middle order collapsed in a hurry and despite the best efforts of Fin Hill they were all out for 132.
George Tapley and Will Popham (1-16) bowled with intent and accuracy to reduce Gwent to 8-2
Further damaged which inflicted by change bowlers Ben Kay (2-22) and Stephen Triner
The momentum slowly swung Gwent's way from 29 for four as Norton (56) and Kellaway (39) capitalised on some inaccurate bowling and poor fielding to reach 144 for seven.
Devon started strongly with Julian Hayter and Morgan Couch compiling an opening partnership of 56.
Hayter (31) was dismissed just before drinks and Couch (27) went soon after.
Hill and Harry Williams made steady progress to 94 when Williams was deceived by spin bowler Kumar.
Devon were on top, but what followed left the home camp stunned.
The next four batsman all failed to score and left Devon reeling on 103 for seven.
Hill could only watch the carnage from the other end, and the tail that so gamely wagged against Gloucestershire needed to do the same again.
The pressure was too much and Devon subsided to 132 all out with two overs to go.
Hill was 39 not out, which took his total for the season to 254 runs @ 84.6!
Congratulations to Gwent who showed real desire to win this match.
Devon will need to get back to the high standards they set themsleves earlier in the season this Sunday when they face a strong Wiltshire team, who beat them by 10 wickets last season, at Bishops Cannings CC.
Thanks to all at Shaldon Optimists CC for the 'getting the game' in trying conditions after Friday and Saturday's heavy rain.
