FRIARY Vaults bowed out of the Bond Timber Plymouth & District League after 14 seasons with a remarkable record.

For the past five years in the midweek competition, Friary Vaults have won at least one trophy.

In 2014 they did the double by winning the Senior Division and the League Cup and they did that again in 2016.

Friary Vaults did one last time in this season’s cup final, defeating Cornwood by three wickets.

Nathan Bell top scored with 30 for Cornwood in their total of 104 for eight. Vaults’ Dan Robotham was the pick of the bowlers with five for 16.

Rob Bennett (24) and Robotham (23) were the leading run scorers for Vaults on the chase.

Andy Walter, the league secretary, said Friary Vaults would be missed.

“Luke Dennis, the captain, has struggled this year with declining numbers and has decided to call time,” said Walter.

“As a league we would like to thank Luke and his team for their time in the competition and hope some players will go on and play for other teams in the league.

The Shield final was won by Jelf Insurance who beat P54 Pirates by 13 runs, Ryan Rickard top cored for Jelf with 58.

One of the most important games of the season is the representative game in memory of the late former Yelverton player Recardo McDowell.

The game is played every year is raise money for Recardo’s sick, young daughter Eva.

“We ask all players to pay £5 and anyone you comes along to watch the same,” said Walter. 

“This year we raised £234, which is a great effort.”

Nick Read (47no) led the League XI to a six-wicket win over Cornwood, for whom Elliot Staddon top scored with 50.

Walter is always keen to recruit new clubs to the competition and has started looking ahead to 2019 already.

“If there are any club or social teams that would like to join the league, they can get hold of me and we will start the ball rolling,” said Walter.
