Fresh from returning from South Africa earlier this month, Joint Tour Managers Matt Cooke and Matt Theedom reflect on this year's trip.
Overview of the Tour
The 22nd edition of the Devon Cricket South Africa Under 15 Boys Tour was an undoubted success, continuing the tradition of providing young cricketers with invaluable experiences both on and off the field. The tour remains a permanent fixture in the Boys' Performance Pathway calendar, offering unforgettable memories, personal development, and cultural enrichment.
Looking back on the 2024 tour, it's hard not to already anticipate the excitement of returning in 2025. Our tour not only challenges players on the cricket pitch but also broadens their horizons through exposure to the country’s unique culture, history, and wildlife. Whether exploring conservation efforts in Skukuza, understanding the legacy of apartheid, or simply taking in the cosmopolitan vibrancy of Cape Town, the tour’s off-field experiences are as valuable as the cricket itself.
On-Field Performances
Across the seven matches played (with one unfortunately cancelled due to rain), the team secured five wins, experienced one tie, and suffered one defeat, a heavy loss against the strongest opposition on the tour during a two-day game. While results on paper are important to us, the true purpose of this tour has always been player development, echoing the philosophy of Alan Swift, the tour’s founding father.
The objective is not to dominate every match but to prepare players for the challenges of cricket across the summer, equipping them with skills for longer formats like two-day and three-day games. The hope is that these young cricketers are not only better players, but also more well-rounded individuals.
Individual Highlights
As with any tour, there were highs and lows for the players, and it’s essential to note that this was not about statistics alone. However, some individual performances merit special recognition:
- Harry Witcher delivered a record-breaking performance, scoring an unbeaten 186 against the Johann Rudolph Academy team in Skukuza. His innings displayed remarkable maturity, stamina, and skill; a testament to the benefits of playing adult cricket regularly.
- Jake Dunn, a leading figure in the team, complemented Witcher's effort with a sensational 107 off just 84 balls in the same match. His innings, featuring six sixes, demonstrated his ability to dominate bowling attacks.
- Aryan Dua, Gethin Williams and Ben Handley all contributed significant half-centuries during the tour, showcasing their consistency with the bat.
- Artie Evans claimed the most wickets, 11, with honourable mentions to Callum Williams and Josh Stewart, who each claimed six wickets.
The squad can all be commended for performing admirably in challenging conditions and creating an excellent team atmosphere throughout the tour.
While statistics provide an outline, the real value of the tour lies in the growth of each individual. Some players thrived on this trip; others faced challenges. But every single one returned home with lessons learned and memories to cherish.
Off-Field Experiences
The tour went beyond cricket, offering the boys insights into South Africa's rich and complex culture. From learning about wildlife conservation in the Kruger National Park to delving into the country's historical struggles, the trip helped shape the players' understanding of the world around them.
These experiences, coupled with the camaraderie built during the tour, ensure that each participant returned home not just as a better cricketer, but as a more empathetic and culturally aware individual.

Reflection
The Devon Cricket South Africa Under 15 Boys Tour continues to be a cornerstone of player development. As the team touched back down in the UK, our hope was threefold: that the players enjoyed the trip, grew as individuals, and came back ready to take on the challenges of the cricketing season ahead.
The 2024 group were a credit to themselves, their families, and the county. Their behaviour, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship embodied everything we could hope for from young ambassadors of Devon Cricket. We now look forward to building on this success in 2025, further cementing the tour’s reputation as a life-changing experience for all involved.
