Harry Everett reports on the penultimate league matches of the season with the DWCL Super 8s Trophy Semi-Finals taking precedence this Sunday and the league season finishing for most on September 1.
Exeter CC, however, have already played their final league game. They sealed the Division One title undefeated, beating Plympton by 79 runs having opted to bat first.
Skipper Katie Donovan opened herself with bat in hand, reaching 19 off 31 balls before leaving it to Wood (38*), Cardoso (30) and Fairbairn (73) again to do the business in the middle order. No one took two wickets for Plympton as they also donated 20 extras to Exeter’s 197-7 off 35 overs.
Plympton’s reply got to 18-1 but stuttered and faltered, only Bell and Turner reaching 20. Donovan herself the only bowler in the match to take more than one wicket (2-6 off five overs) as Plympton batted out their overs to the tune of 118-8.
Cornwood had the most emphatic victory of this round, beating Plymouth by 10 wickets in the Southwest Devon derby. Plymouth would not have been expecting to not take a wicket having put on 138 all out having been inserted. Keira De Villiers emulating her namesake with 58 off 45 balls, including 10 fours and a six, after Shini Al Khalid had 3-19 of the top four for Cornwood.
Gemma Lancaster and Evie Privett ensured no one else need bat, and little time was wasted, both reaching 60 with 100+ strike-rates and finishing the game not out.
North Devon Tarka Ladies hosted Hatherleigh at Instow and were inserted. Hatherleigh found former Auckland Hearts star Regina Lilii in a hot-streak of batting form having scored 38 v Bradninch & Kentisbeare II the day before. Her 84 at three was the backbone of the innings, supplemented by wicketkeeper Ellie Holland’s 44. Olivia Cooper and Hester Presswell had identical figures opening the bowling for Hatherleigh; 2-33.
Lilii is living at Shebbear College with her partner and made it three games in three days as she also played vs the South Oxford Amateurs on Monday, but despite getting the key wicket of away skipper Chloe Rose for 52, her Sunday bowling figures of 1-18 were usurped by her opening colleague Megan Zieleniewicz’s 3-14. Cooper also added 40 to be the away player of the match, but the away side fell 40 runs short at 148-6.
In Division Two, Exmouth won by 96 runs as mid-40s from Katelyn Clark and Sharon Dawkins saw 152-4 too many as openers Emily Smith and Olivia Smith skittled Bradninch and Kentisbeare for 56 inside 18 overs.
Clyst St George racked up 231-1 thanks to 92 from Charlotte Taylor and 82* from Alyssia Hales. Exeter were 87 all out inside 20 overs in reply, losing by 145 runs.
Bovey Tracey finish their league campaign in second place thanks to unbeaten tons from Monica Gair and skipper Kelly Luscombe. 303-0 from 35 overs played 34 all out inside nine overs for a mammoth 269 run victory. Lily Colwill taking 4-10.
