DEVON have delayed naming their 12 for Sunday’s crunch NCA KO Trophy clash with Wiltshire at Sidmouth (11am) while the team management grapples with selection problems.

Matt Golding’s century, and three wickets each for Ned Leonard and Calum Haggett, helped Devon to a 14-run win over Cornwall at Redruth.

Devon had to win at Trewergie to stay in contention for a qualifying spot in the five-team pool – and need to keep winning to finish in the top two.

Leonard, who is dual-registered with Somerset, can’t play against Wiltshire, which leaves a gap in the new-ball attack.

Bovey Tracey paceman Hugo Whitlock missed the win over Cornwall due to injury and Devon will give him as long as possible to recover in the hope of naming him in the match-day 12.

Dan Goodey, the Plymouth pacer, has been out for two weeks with an ankle injury and is not certain of being able to bowl for his club side this Saturday.  He is aiming to be fit to face Dorset at Dorchester in the final qualifying game a week on Sunday.

Dave Tall, Devon’s director of cricket, said he does not want to change a winning line-up more than is necessary.

“Hugo for Ed would be a good swap, but I can’t envisage too many other changes,” said Tall.

“We might tweak the batting a bit, but there won’t be many new faces.”

One tweak Tall and captain Jamie Stephens may consider is moving opener James Degg down the order after a run of modest scores for club side Plymouth and the county.

Bumping match pro Calum Hagget up the order is one of the options available to Tall and Stephens.

Devon’s qualifying group could not be any closer as four of the five teams are on two points behind leaders Herefordshire, who have four points.

Devon do have two games in hand on top two Herefordshire and Cornwall, but so do Dorset and Wiltshire, the sides Devon have to finish ahead of.

There are all sorts of permutations based on results elsewhere, but Tall prefers not to think about them.

“Why worry about games you cannot influence in any way?” said Tall.

“If we win our last two games then we are bound to finish in the top two.”
