It was set to be a beautiful day for the first under 11s festival of the season at Plympton Cricket Club on Sunday 13th June. Devon Cricket are running festivals for under 11 girls and older girls who are new to cricket across the county during June and July. They are designed to give the girls meaningful playing opportunities as new teams are set up ahead of setting up leagues in 2022.

Three teams arrived at Plympton - Plymouth, Cornwood and Mini Moorland Maidens (Yelverton and Buckland Monachorum combined) to a glorious looking ground in the sunshine. After a quick warm up of All Change where the girls got the opportunity to get to know each other, it was straight into playing. 8 aside pairs cricket was the format for the day and the first game was between Cornwood and Plymouth.

Linking up with the Western Storm Champion Course at the beginning of June, we were lucky enough to have two of the older young women to come and run bowling and batting drills while they were not playing. Having the older role models for the younger girls is a real positive step forward.

Our Young Storm Champion leads the bowling activity

In the next game, a more confident Plymouth played the Mini Moorland Maidens and finally the Mini Moorland Maidens played Cornwood. The girls grew in confidence as the morning went on and the atmosphere was greatly helped by some very encouraging parents!

This Sunday, 20th June the next festival is at Chagford, where 5 different teams have entered into the morning festival. Once again we have Young Storm Champions coming to help with running the games and activities.

If you would like to enter to team into the festival then please contact Ann-Marie Presswell
