Fern, who joined Exeter in 2013 after landing a job in Newton Abbot, has been on the captaincy shortlist in the past without getting the gig. Work commitments got in the way.

Now largely available for the entire season, Fern is looking to make his mark on one of the toughest jobs in Devon cricket.

“One of the biggest challenges is living up to the reputation Exeter has and carrying the club through at a decent level,” said the 31-year-old.

“Exeter asked me to be captain and I am looking at more than just one year. I will do it for as long as they want me to.”

Captains are ultimately defined by results and Fern is confident he has the players to make Exeter competitive in the Tolchards Devon League this season.

“I am optimistic about the season as we have a lot of young guys keen to play who are full of skill, talent an eagerness,” said Fern.

“After last season when very little cricket was played, the eagerness is to get out there and prove a few points.

“I don’t see Exeter being in the bottom half of the table.”

Fern is still fine-tuning the squad for the season ahead, which may include finding an overseas player to replace the original pick, who has been forced to pull out.

“We have not conscripted anyone yet, but do have someone in mind,” said Fern.

“The player concerned is already in Exeter, and has looked good in the nets, but I don’t want to say any more until I have seen him in a match.”

One player safely signed-up is former Chudleigh all-rounder Alex Haywood, who has been batting in the early order and also bowls leg-spin.

Fern started his cricket journey in the youth section at Oswestry and went through the Shropshire county age-group system up to the age of 21.

As Fern’s career progressed he stepped up a level to play Premier cricket for Wroxeter. He played at Wrekin College and also at university in Nottingham. He has also turned out for the MCC.

Exeter’s team management will hope Fern can bring some stability to the role of 1stXI captain. Since Miles Lenygon ended his four-year stint in 2017, Alex Barrow (2018), Tom Pedel (2019) and Ed Middleton, who was caretaker in 2020 have all had a go.

Exeter 2nd XI will be led by Graham White, who was match captain in 2020.
