MATT Trevorrow bagged five wickets and Matt Ball claimed three more as Plymouth Civil Service & Roborough skittled Cornwood 3rd XI for just 13 runs and went on to win by 10 wickets in no time at all in West Four.

Cornwood’s problems started with five runs on the board when Trevorrow had opener Josh Wood dismissed for three.

Three more wickets fell for no runs added – two for Ball, one for Trevorrow – and from then on the Cornwood innings unraveled.

Trevorrow finished with five Cornwood wickets for eight runs conceded and Ball, a recent recruit from Chudleigh, had three for five. A run-out and a wicket for James Sharp completed the rout.

Three overs and one ball was the time Civil needed to knock off the 14 runs needed to win the game.

Brian Gaylard, the Civil captain, said there were no gremlins in the new pitch at Manadon that could be blamed for Cornwood’s collapse.

“Cornwood’s openers went about things the right way, but once they went there was some questionable shot selection,” said Gaylard.

“Our bowlers put the ball in the right areas – they bowled straight  – and the batsmen played some poor shots.

“Our new square is still settling down and is a bit slow, but it played fine.”

Nick Goodliffe, who coaches at Cornwood, said an opportunity to blood young cricketers had backfired.

“We had a weakened side out due to various absences and used the opportunity to give some under 15s their first taste of senior cricket,” said Goodliffe.

“Unfortunately it resulted in a major mismatch in teams and probably not much fun for anyone.”
