EXWICK have issued an open invitation to women and girls over the age of 14 to have a go at cricket tomorrow (Thursday) night.

Cricket is enjoying a high profile at the moment following England men’s win over New Zealand in the World Cup final at Lord’s.

England are world champions in the men’s and women’s game and both sides are competing against Australia in Ashes series.

Heather Knight, the former Plymstock and Devon youth player, is the current England women's captain.

Ray Lloyd, the Exwick chairman, hopes a taster session or two will encourage even more women and girls to take up the game.

“We want to extend to everyone the opportunity to get involved with our wonderful sport,” said Lloyd.

“Please come along to our open evening, where we are hoping to arrange a couple of fun, introductory sessions for women and girls to have a go at the skills that make up the game.”

More and more women and girls are playing cricket on Saturday afternoons in the Tolchards Devon League – and Exwick is one of the clubs with a lady player.

First team wicketkeeper Megan Thompson-Summers has been playing league cricket regularly for the past four seasons.

Megan will be at the opening evening, which is being staged at the Thatched House pub (EX4 2BQ) from 7.30pm.

The host for the evening is former England women’s rugby international Helen Hume.

“Come on down and find out how you can get involved in our local cricket community,” said Lloyd.
