BOVEY Tracey skipper Toby Codd has urged his team-mates not to get carried away by the nine-wicket win over previously unbeaten Premier leaders Paignton.

Hugo Whitlock (3-23) and Ryan Bougourd (3-21) softened up the early order then bits and pieces from Ashley Causey (2-15) and Codd himself had Paignton all out for 72 in 29.5 overs.

Opener Harry Ward made 21 – Chris Bradley spun him out at 70 for nine – and next best was the 15 byes and wides in the extras column.

Bovey lost opener Josh Mailling cheaply – in and out for four to Paignton captain George Benton – Brian Chari (27no) and Abraham Kopparambil (38no) saw Bovey home with nearly 30 overs to spare.

Paignton drop back to second in the table as Heathcoat took maximum points from their derby win over Sandford to snatch the leadership.

It was Bovey’s fifth win on the spin and lifts them to fourth, 18 points behind Heathcoat.

Having beaten the leaders once, Bovey have to do it all over again this Saturday when they host Heathcoat.

Said Codd: “Heathcoat with everyone available – Holman, Pyle, Lewis and the rest – are probably the strongest side we will play this season.

“How we do against Heathcoat will tell us where we are in the scheme of things.”

Codd said he was surprised when opposite number Benton won the toss and batted as conditions were probably better suited to bowling first.

“Put it this way the pitch was only going to get better and I would have bowled first if I got to choose,” said Codd.

“Paignton went at it hard from the start, our seamers bowled brilliantly and put us in a winning position.”

Benton put his hands up and admitted his side got it wrong, but insisted it was a setback and not a disaster.

“We didn't approach the game well,” said Benton.

“Fair play to Bovey as they bowled and fielded very well and contained us.

“We aren't down about the defeat as to be in the position we are (2nd) is great for us.

“We will bounce back this Saturday against Exeter and be stronger.”
