David Wheaton and colleagues from WBW Solicitors with the quiz champion's shield

THERE was yet another bumper attendance at Sidmouth CC for the charity quiz/2019 Devon CCC Souvenir Brochure event.

By way of extending a warm welcome Chairman Neil Gamble stated this the 4th edition was now of 64 pages thus double that of the initial 2016 edition, it had been circulated to all Devon registered clubs, tourist information centres throughout the county and as previously available free to all spectators at county home fixtures: spreading the word in promoting Devon CCC was so important so with copies available for all in attendance this evening after reading please pass it on to neighbours and friends.

With 90 people attending spread over 15 teams it was particularly pleasing to see teams from brochure advertisers making debuts with HARTS of HONITON, WBW SOLICITORS and ABBEYFIELD SIDMOUTH in that category thereby joining regulars from SIDMOUTH HOSPISCARE, THE ROYAL GLEN HOTEL, SIDMOUTH TOWN COUNCIL, YOUR MOVE EDWARDS ESTATE AGENTS and BESLEY & COPP, the latter being the printers of the brochure, with other regulars making 15 teams in total.

Quiz “supremo“ Jo de Remer, ably assisted by husband Tom, as previously, compiled an excellent series of questions which resulted in nothing less than an epic finish decided on a Tie Break Question during which you could hear a pin drop such was the tension !: as the answers were given out such was there closeness there was a loud gasp on WBW Solicitors being announced the winners  at the expense of Your Move Estate Agents, a team to finish runners up for a scarcely believable third time in four years !: not surprisingly team captain Jim Edwards was busy in consoling his team ahead of making any comment, whereas in contrast WBW Team Captain, David Wheaton, prior to holding the prestigious trophy aloft said” his team were delighted to win the quiz albeit by the narrowest of margins .We won by a cat`s whisker or perhaps in view of the Tie Breaker a mouse`s whisker!: we put it down to beginners luck :however we will certainly be back next year and we were delighted at the funds raised for the three charities”.

The sumptuous buffet prepared by club caterer Gill Hodge drew the usual high praise, Julie behind the bar was delighted with the brisk trade both of whom were rightly commended by Chairman Neil Gamble in his closing remarks, not forgetting expressing sincere thanks to Tom and Jo for much of the success of this evening and the previous three such events owed much to their preparation: Neil then finally went on to say how important the links  with community good causes are to the project of “ helping to raise the profile of DEVON COUNTY CRICKET CLUB “ and in this regard he was delighted to confirm the marvellous sum of £400 had been raised for SIDMOUTH HOSPISCARE, THE SID VALLEY MEMORY CAFÉ and THE DAVID SHEPHERD CRICKET TRUST with particular thanks to BRADFORDS, WAITROSE, LEXYS HAIR SALON, CRW PRINT CONSULTANTS and many individuals for the donation of raffle prizes .
