Chudleigh keeper Mark Solway in action against Budleigh Salterton last season

CHUDLEIGH skipper Matt Heather is making no rash predictions ahead of the new season at Kate Brook.

Heather’s first season as skipper ended on a low note in relegation from the Tolchards Devon League A Division.

Chudleigh know the way between the A and B Divisions having been up and down five times since 2009.

The last time Chudleigh dropped from the A to the B Division in 2014 they were promoted back again the following season.

Heather would like to go straight back up but is not sticking his neck out too far.

“To get promotion back into the A Division at the first time of asking would be great, but with the B Division being so competitive we are under no illusions how tough it will be,” said Heather.

“We are looking forward to the challenge and will take each week as it comes.”

Chudleigh finished rock bottom with just three wins from 18 games and could see the writing on the wall with a month to go.

Heather said it may have been a tough season, but there were long-term benefits.

“Our younger players had great exposure to a decent standard of cricket and learned a lot as a result,” said Heather.

“I am expecting big things from Alex Haywood and Adam Sercombe in particular this year.

“We will have better availability from our existing squad this season with players coming back from injury and some with fewer work commitments, so we are in a good place.”

Heather has been squad building during the winter, bringing veteran all-rounder Derek Lammonby and son Will to the club from Chagford.

Lammonby senior was Exeter’s overseas pro in the early 1990s and club professional for Clacton in Essex for several seasons. Somerset’s Tom Lammonby is his nephew.

Will Lammonby played youth cricket at South Devon, who were hoping to lure him back following Chagford’s relegation from the C Division West last season. He will be available regularly from the halfway stage.

“Del and Will are two great signings for us,” said Heather. Both have a lot to offer with bat and ball and will strengthen our team significantly.”

Heather said the committee have been working hard during the winter to find sponsorship and have a new playing shirt sponsor this year in the Pension Drawdown Company.

“We have had a great pre-season and the atmosphere around the club is great,” said Heather.

“New players are always welcome and anyone should contact Heather on 07920 218121.
