Hal Kerton - crucial spell at the death for Plymouth

PLYMOUTH’S winning streak is five games long now after their seven-run verdict at Sidmouth.

James Burke (97) and Joe Hagan-Burt (95) fell with hundreds in sight as Plymouth made 277 for eight in their 50 overs.

Key stands for Plymouth were 52 between Burke and Faizan Riaz (26), 78 between Burke and Jon Varcoe (20) and 61 between Burke and Hagan-Burt.

Aviwa Mgijima (3-56) took the bowling plaudits for Sidmouth.

Sidmouth went for it right to the end with Luke Bess (74), Josh Bess (41), Matt Cooke (32) and Will Murray (31no) nibbling away at the lead.

Luke Bess and Cooke put on 87 for the fourth wicket to cause Plymouth some worries.

Had Cooke stayed a little longer – Dan Goodey ran him out to make the score 209 for seven – Sidmouth may have sneaked the result.

Last pair Murray and Max Hancock needed eight to win off the last two balls. Faizan Riaz (4-64) settled it Plymouth’s way by bowling Hancock.

Hal Kerton (2-16) also bowled when the heat was on at the end.

“Hal bowled a great spell under pressure,” said winning skipper Varcoe.

“We batted well on a tricky pitch – Joey and Burkey were class with the bat – and got over the line with the ball which we failed to do at the start of the season.”

Plymouth only won once in their first six starts and were bumping along the bottom until the winning run started with victory over Hatherleigh.

The city side are fifth in the latest table, 29 points behind leaders Heathcoat with seven games to go.
