IT was third time lucky for Torquay 2ndXI opener Tim Western in the 82-run derby win over Barton.
Western was out for 97 against Plymouth CS&R and 99 against Kenn earlier in the season
This time the veteran left-hander went all the way to 113 before Matt Lipton ran him out in Torquay’s total of 253 for eight.
Olly Latto (31) supported Western in a stand of 111 for the second wicket. Matt McCann made 34.
Tom Porter took the bowling honours for Barton with four for 36.
Barton were all out in reply for 171, McCann bagging four of their wickets for 40 runs. Ian Baker and Issac Bond took two each.
Lewis Crocker (46) to top scored for Barton after Adam Latham (38) and Porter (36) made early runs.
It all went wrong from 148 onwards as the last five wickets went for 23 runs.
SOUTH Devon were brought down to earth after their crushing win over Plymouth Civil Service & Roborough when they were on the receiving end against D West leaders Stoke Gabriel.
The team that had beaten Civil by 302 runs seven days earlier was itself beaten by 122 runs in the rematch with Stoke.
South Devon lost at Stoke on the opening day of the season and were gunning for revenge second time round back at Marsh Road.
A revenge win always looked a tall order after Stoke piled up 291 for eight – Jack Tolley, Andy Kingdon and Seb Ansley all making half-centuries or more – and so it proved.
South Devon, who paraded new signings Guy Paxman and Allan Kerr for the first time, were bowled out for 169 with 11 of their 45 overs to go.
As chasers Yelverton were beaten by Plymouth 2ndXI, Stoke Gabriel now lead the table by 28 points.
Defeat drops South Devon down to fifth in a table of ten. Points wise they are now closer to the bottom three (+23pts) than the top three (-32).
Tolley (57) made the early runs for Stoke then Kingdon (57) and Ansley (77) loaded on 127 for the fourth wicket.
Dinesh Raheja (3-45) picked up thee wickets and there were two each for James Allen (2-35) and Kerr (2-70).
Opener Harry Senior was the South Devon anchorman up to 119 for five when he got out to Nick Gwynne (3-43).
Richard Beaumont made 23 and Allen 16, which did not leave a lot from the rest.
PLYMOUTH Civil Service & Roborough sprang the shock of the day in the D Division West when they beat Paignton by three wickets.
Seven days earlier Civil had been on the wrong end of a 302-run hiding at South Devon.
Any result was going to be better than that – and to win against a side who started the day five places above them was a real tonic for the troops.
Charlie Ward top scored for Paignton with 38 in their 30-over total of 157 for eight.
Jason Woodcock (20) and Luke Medlock (23) chipped in. Al Stewart snapped up four Paignton wickets for 27 runs.
Jack Dent (22) and Dan Winsor (48) put Civil on course for victory. Jarod Harvey (24no) sealed the deal. Ward (3-30) was Paignton’s leading wicket taker.
PLYMOUTH II snatched second place off Yelverton when they beat them by 182 runs at Langton Park.
Jeff Martin (96) and Steve Luffman (95) were Plymouth’s prime run getters in their total of 283 for seven.
Yelverton were skittled out for 101 with Geoff Brain (28) offering the most resistance.
John Kerridge spun away for figures for four for 33 and Dave Burke took two for 22.
Stoke Gabriel (180pts) top the table from Plymouth (168) and Yelverton (159).
WHITCHURCHWayfarers lost by nine runs on the chase at Kenn.
Martin Swannell (69) and James Gosling (43) led the way for Kenn with 72 for the second wicket. James Mason added 31 to a final tally of 192 all out in 35 overs.
Dan Poole was the bowler of the day for Whitchurch with six for 23.
Whitchurch were 183 for seven when the overs expired. Opener and captain Ben Powell made 70 and Mark Gibbs 36 in a stand of 72, but it wasn’t enough.
Swannell capped a man-of-the-match display with three wickers for 22 runs.
