Luke Bess, scored a ton for Sidmouth against Bovey Tracey

SIDMOUTH get to spend a second week at the top of the Premier table after handing out a 202-run hiding to defending champions Bovey Tracey.

Luke Bess and Cape Cobras’ Aviwa Mgijima both scored centuries as Sidmouth hurtled to 369 for four in 50 overs.

Bess nailed 13 fours and three sixes in his 119 off 135 balls. Mgijima went at it hard from the word go, reaching 132 in 88 deliveries, 11 of which went for four and seven more for six.

Bovey’s cause wasn’t helped by losing opening bowler Hugh Whitlock to an injury after three overs.

Pulled up - Bovey pace bowler Hugo WhitlockAfter Bess and Mgijima had put on 227 for the third wicket there was still time for Zak Bess to club 54 not out off 26 balls to rub salt into Bovey wounds.

One or two Sidmouth fingernails were being chewed while opener Sean Dalliston (81) and Abraham Kopparambil (51) took Bovey to 119 for two.

Dalliston’s dismissal at 152 became a case of one out, all out as the middle order collapsed.

Eight wickets went for 15 runs added as Josh Bess (2-34) and Charlie Miles (3-37) did most of the damage.

Skipper and centurion Bess said: “It was about time we had some contributions with the bat.

“It helped that it was about as flat as a wicket can get and Hugo could only bowl three overs.

“We need to make sure we find some consistency now.”

Bovey skipper Codd said amid the wreckage of a crushing defeat there were some positives.

“It was always going to be difficult without Hugo, but credit must go to Sidmouth who were outstanding,” said Bess.,

“Luke and Mgijima batted superbly and didn't offer a chance.

“For us it was great to see Abraham Kopparambil bat so maturely and with high class for such a young lad. He looks a great prospect for the future.”
