Gary Chappell - runs and wickets for Devon in the T20 double-header against Cornwall at Truro

DEVON and Cornwall shared the spoils at Truro in Unicorns Twenty20 Trophy double-header.

The new tournament complements the 50-over Unicorns KO Cup, which has been scaled down in duration to make time for its short-format cousin.

Cornwall and Devon are both on learning curves as T20 games have been few and far between in Minor County Cricket until now.

Both camps agreed afterwards their knowledge of the format had improved by getting out in the middle.

Cornwall were comfortable winners in the morning clash after racking up 141 for six. Sam Wood hit 45 – he and Tom Rowe (39) put on 61 for the third wicket – and Paul Smith’s 18 helped the score along.

Cornwall captain Matt Rowe spun his way to figures of five for 14 as Devon were held to 100 for nine in reply.

Devon reworked their options in game two and emerged from it four-wicket winners with four balls to spare.

Somerset’s Peter Trego hit 38 in Cornwall’s total of 127 for seven.

Chappell (44) and Matt Thompson laid the foundation for the Devon chase, which was finished off by Zac Bess (29no).

Godfrey Furse, the Cornwall team manager, said lessons learned will stay behind the dressing room door for now.

Furse added: “We bowled poorly in the second game and paid for it.

“We gave Devon too many full-tosses and too many four balls and, credit to them, they put them away.

“In the first game we were always in a strong position after scoring 140 on a 120 wicket.

“Then we bowled out first two overs for three runs, which meant Devon had to score at eight an over and they were never going to do that.”

Keith Donohue, Devon’s director of cricket, said lessons learned in defeat paved the way for victory in the rematch.

“I wouldn’t say chasing 140 to win was impossible, but on that wicket it would have been hard,” said Donohue.

“We learned pretty quickly not to send all our left-handers in when their off-spinners were bowling and mixed it up in the second game.

“Jamie Stephens played as an extra spinner in the game we won, which seemed to work well.”

Devon will try to move a bit further along the learning curve today when they face Dorset in another double date, this time at Sidmouth. They lose Somerset pair Ben Green and Finlay Trenouth from the squad, but gain Alex Barrow, Tom Lammonby and Joe Thompson.

Dorset will arrive on a high and top of the pool four table after beating Wiltshire twice in a day at Bashley. Somerset’s Max Waller is added to their squad.

Cornwall have back-to-back games against Wales at Newport, where they will run into their former pro Brad Wadlan in his new role as Wales captain.

Wales were the inactive odd team out in a pool of five yesterday.
