CORNWOOD ended a three-game wait for a win when they beat lowly Brixham by six wickets.

Brixham, who won for the first time this season seven days earlier when they defeated Plymstock, were bowled out for 141.

Only two batsmen made double-figure scores – Somerset’s one-day captain James Allenby (56) and South African Jason Oakes (51).

Allenby and Oakes joined forces when Brixham were seven for two after Matt Skeemer and Adam Goodlife (2-15) had taken a wicket each.

A stand of 99 took Brixham up to 106 for three, after which the next best scores were a couple of sixes.

Spinner Matt Tamsett broke the stand when he snared Oakes. Allenby was fifth out on 125, caught behind.

If Tamsett didn’t get them Jason Hall (3-33) did as Brixham’s last six wickets went for 16 runs.

Skipper Elliot Staddon didn’t take a wicket, but bowling nine overs for 20 runs heaped more pressure on Brixham.

Cornwood lost openers Mark Roca and Matt Butterworth by the time they reached 28, but that was as good as it got for Brixham.

Matt Skeemer (63no) and Steve Lambert (27) broke the back of the chase by hoisting 90 for the third wicket.

Matt Parsons, whose hat-trick finished off Plymstock the week before, spun out Lambert and Hall.

By the time Hall went the target was two to win and the game effectively over.

Winning skipper Staddon said it was the bounceback win he hoped for.

Staddon added: “Our bowling and fielding performance, taking Brixham from 110-2 with Allenby and Oakes at the crease, to 141 all out was really impressive.

“We kept things very tight which allowed us to build pressure towards the end of their innings and picked up all 10 wickets.

“Our seamers bowled well up front and our spinners really keeping it tight.

“The run chase got off to a slightly wobbly start when we lost a couple of early wickets, but Matt Skeemer's 64 not out was what we needed

“With Sandford and Hatherleigh both playing some good cricket, we need to keep winning to keep the pressure on.”

Cornwood still have some catching up to do as they trail second-placed Sandford by 28 points.

Hatherleigh are a whopping 61 points in front of Cornwood and looks hard to catch.
