CORNWOOD dropped down to fourth in the A Division table after slumping to a 48-run defeat at Budleigh Salterton.

Matt Skeemer and Jason Hall took three wickets each as Cornwood dismissed Budleigh for 141.

Cornwood slumped to 18 for four in reply, a running total of 24 for six was no improvement, and only got to 93 all out thanks to a patient 35 by Ryan Rickard.

Somerset staffer Max Waller took five wickets and Matt Junk had four more.

Duncan Boase, Cornwood’s director of cricket, was unimpressed by his side’s showing, irrespective of the Waller factor.

“Take nothing away from Budleigh – they bowled well and knew how to use their spin,” said Boase.

“Having bowled extremely well ourselves it was an awful display with the bat.

“We need to dig in against better bowlers and stand up and be counted.

“More application is needed - and more time spent in nets.”

Skeemer (3-26) and Hall (3-25) had Budleigh rocking at 64 for four, but hadn’s shifted opener Junk.

Junk’s cautious 64 not out off 98 balls was the glue that held Budleigh together.

Partnerships of 23 with Waller (18), 27 with Ben Phillips and 44 with Ben Carter (27) were the difference between winning and losing a low-scoring game.

Junk and Waller got stuck in from the start, only Mark Roca (12) making many in the running total of 24 for six.

Rickard put on 22 with Shahzad Ahmed, 23 with Adam Goodliffe (17) and 19 with Matt Tamsett, but the damage had already been done before then.

Budleigh went past Cornwood into third place on the strength of their win.

Plympton are only a point behind in fifth having upset second-placed Sandford at Harewood Park.
