Appointed - New Heathcoat captain Peter Randerson

HEATHCOAT have asked keeper-batsman Peter Randerson to take over as skipper next year.

Randerson takes over from South African Bradley Barnes, who led the Premier Division side last season.

Barnes has had two seasons with Heathcoat as their overseas player. Getting third-year visas is always difficult for overseas players, especially if they are not playing First Class cricket at home.

When Barnes first signed for Heathcoat in 2015 he was a regular in the Western Province side. He has been unable to get his place back since and has been limited to league cricket with Bellville CC in Cape Town.

Randerson, who rejoined Heathcoat from Sidmouth last season, is among the senior players in the side and an obvious choice to take over.

“I am looking forward to getting started and excited to see how our promising youngsters go next season,” said Randerson.

Barnes topped the batting averages – 728 runs at an average in the 50s – with good support from Randerson (397) and Sam Smith (266).

The next generation of batters Randerson is looking forward to seeing include Jack Dart (233), Dylan Penberthy (266) and Toby Lochead (209).

It’s fingers crossed for Lochead, who has been recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident.

“Toby is very poorly with a bad back, hopefully he will get well soon,” said Randerson.
