About

Devon is delighted to be able to formally launch a Senior Women’s Development Squad for the 2016 season, which aims to provide a high level of cricket to equip players for the demands & pressures of senior women’s county cricket.

The standard of cricket for aspiring senior players in the past has not always been sufficient at club and district/county junior level to fully prepare players to step up to the senior side, and the Development Squad is now aimed at helping these players gain greater experience at the higher level.

Devon has been represented previously at an invitational event by an U19 side, and also recently sent a Development Squad to Cape Town, along with sides from Western Province, Zimbabwe and Loughborough University. Building on this momentum, the time is now right to create a formal Development Squad, who initially will play fixtures against Cornwall, Lancashire and Yorkshire, as well as aiming to defend the u19 title they won in 2015.More games are being sought for the season which will provide greater opportunities and aid player development so they are ready to step up to the senior side.

The introduction of the Kia Women’s Cricket Super League and in particular Devon’s exceptionally strong representation at this level will inevitably create more opportunities for players and it’s important that the gap in standard and demands from age group to the  senior level is bridged in this way.  In the long term, the greater opportunities for more women to develop their skills will also see a rise in the standard of club cricket which will benefit us all.

The Development squad will have no upper age limit, however the age group is initially likely to be 16-18 yrs. We’re keen to include players of all ages – the aim is for club players who are performing well in league cricket across the county to be seeking selection, it’s vital to its success that there will always be opportunities for players to enter the development squad at any point.
