Golfers help Women's county club raise £2,500 towards playing expenses

TEE-mendous! That was the verdict from competitors in the annual golf day fund-raiser for Devon’s Women and Development squads.

Fifty golfers signed up for the event, held this year for the first time at Tiverton Golf Club.

A total of £600 was raised which, along with other fundraising events the squads have undertaken over the winter, have put more than £2,500 in the bank.

Warren Carr, the team’s director of coaching, said numerous events had taken place.

“We have stage a 24-hour cyclathon on static bikes, gone bag packing in Tavistock, run charity book sales and organised a Women's World T20 fantasy competition,” said Carr.

“Combined with personal sponsorship and the continued generous support of the David Shepherd Cricket Trust, this will go a long way to making playing cricket this season a lot easier for Devon's female cricketers.”

The David Shepherd Cricket Trust made a £3,000 grant to the squads earlier this year.

Andy Pryce, the club captain at Tiverton and the greenkeeping team, produced a course in superb condition. Golfers were welcomed with coffee and bacon roll ahead of their rounds and welcomed back with a much needed hot meal on a cold day.

Representatives from both squads were on hand to coordinate the collection of green fees and for the sale of raffle tickets.

John Ansley's team from Paignton were victorious in the four-ball competition, followed by Pryce who was joined by wife Jayne and his two sons as they picked up second prize with Gary Hutchins of HandH picking up third prize.

Peter Chislett (Kenn) and his team collected the red-ball competition prize. Two individual prizes went to Jayne Pryce, who took nearest the pin and longest drive for females.

Car said special thanks were due to main sponsors H and H Installations and Eddy's Carpet Cleanz. Samurai Sports, Shrey Sports and Woodbury Park Golf Club all contributed team prizes.
