DCB chairman Jon Sparkes used an appearance on the BBC’s Spotlight news programme to remind cricket lovers across Devon there are games going on at their local club.

Sparkes, who doubles up as treasurer of Ivybridge CC, was the interviewed by Natalie Cornah outside the club’s pavilion during a live insert into the programme.

Sparkes did not hesitate when the invitation arrived to appear on television as it was an opportunity not to be missed.

“I wanted to get the message across that cricket is back and that it is the only team sport you can go out and watch,” said Sparkes.

“We arranged an extra training sessions involving all parts of our club – seniors, juniors and ladies – and everything went brilliantly, apart from the weather.

“Natalie briefed us on what she was looking for from the piece and we did it live into the programme.

“I have never spoken on camera before and at first the prospect of it was a bit nerve-wracking.

“I was nervous at first, but you are in your comfort zone talking about something you enjoy doing, which makes it easier.

“It was a great opportunity to talk about my club and also highlight what is going on in Devon and how clubs are coping. I had a message to get across and hope that I did it.”
