Cornwood bounce back from Plymstock loss with win over Yelverton to keep promotion hopes alive

Aaron Richards – made 51 for Cornwood against Yelverton

CORNWOOD 2nd XI defeated Yelverton by 70 runs to take over from Plymouth in second place.

Aaron Richards (51) and James Richardson (51) put on 83 for Cornwood’s fourth wicket after a patchy start against Richard Townsend (2-39).

Archie Trevethan (34) and Matt Tamsett (29) kept the board ticking over and last-man Andy Bees was 18 not out in a final total of 234 for nine.

Pick of the Yelverton bowlers by a distance with four for 23 from nine overs was Jon Malan.

Yelverton had everything to do after dipping from 82 for three to 93 for five and then 115 for seven in reply. Only David Ackford (28) and Townsend (19) made much headway.

Fred Smale (28), in at 109 for six, nursed the lower order long enough to earn two batting bonus points in an all-out tally of 164.

Tamsett (3-7) pipped Jack Brown (2-23) and Bees (2-37) in Cornwood’s bowling stats.

Robin Dart, the Cornwood captain, was happy to bounce back with a win following the loss to Plymstock. But he warned against over-confidence.

“Although it was nice to get back to winning ways, it wasn't our best performance,” said Dart.

“Aaron and James went really well at the start with and we were fortunate the tail wagged to get us up to 234 thanks to great efforts from Matt Tamsett and Archie Trevethan.

“We were good with ball and held our catches in the drizzle so as not to not let the win slip through our fingers.”

In a division with only one promotion place Cornwood have to do something about the 28 point gap between them and Plymstock to win promotion.

It’s a tall order, but Dart has not given up hopes.

“If we keep winning, and availability stays good, who knows what will happen?” he said.
