PLYMPTON thrashed Abbotskerswell by 153 runs to move up to second place in the A Division.

Justin Wubbeling top scored with 50 for Plympton in a total of 247 all out.

Elliot Hamilton opened up with 46 for Plympton, but other than Wubbeling the top order failed to perform and at 111 for six Abbots had them under the cosh.

Wubbelling batted on and on to wring valuable runs out of the bottom order, especially 62 with Matt Knight that brought 200 in sight.

And a last-wicket stand of 44 between the Caunter brothers – Josiah (16) and Jacob (28) – kept Abbots in the field far longer than they anticipated.

“It was the 86 combined from 9, 10 and11 that took the game away from Abbotskerswell,” said Jonty Walliker, the Plympton vice-captain.

James Vincent (4-37) and Nick Watkin (2-16) combined wicket-taking and economy for Abbots.

Abbots struggled at the start against Jonty Walliker (3-17) and were 25 for three before Watkin (44no) and Chris Sleep (24) stopped the rot.

Once Sleep fell to Tino Mutombodzi the batting collapsed at the other end from Watkin.

Mutombodzi took four wickets, Josiah Caunter (3-29) had three more and Abbots were all out or 94.

“We were faultless in the field,” said Walliker. “Every bowler did their job and at 25 for three after 15 overs the result was clear.

“Perhaps one fault can be found: Tino has never taken five wickets in Devon cricket, but we hope one is on its way.”

Victory took Plympton past Torquay, who lost to Exmouth.

Watkin said there were plus points in Abbots’ performance, but they were few and far between.

“We were convincingly beaten by a better side,” said Watkin.

“James Vincent bowled outstandingly well for us and we should have been chasing 180. But the way Plympton bowled, and we batted, it didn't really matter.

“Credit to Plympton, whom I thought were exceptional in the field.”
