C Division West round-up – week 11: Plymouth 2nd XI oust Teignmouth & Shaldon from second place

Kingsbridge captain Steve Edmonds – three wickets in the win over South Devon

PLYMOUTH 2ndXI ousted Teignmouth & Shaldon from second place in the C West table with a 106-run win in the other top-of-the-table clash.

While Plymstock and Cornwood were settling their differences at Dean Cross, Plymouth (4th) and Teignmouth & Shaldon (2nd) were squaring up on the other side of the Sound at Mount Wise.

Opener Harry Stephenson top scored for Plymouth with 82 and was involved in stands worth 169 before he was bowled by Ruben Minnaar (3-58). He and Rob Bennett (37) posted 83 for the third wicket.

A further partnership of 62 between Sam White 37) and Aditya Sanapala (37) kept the board ticking over.

Carl Woolnough (2-49) and Seamus McKenna (2-38) backed-up Minnaar in the  T&S attack.

Teignmouth & Shaldon started brightly in reply with a stand of 72 between Minnaar (36) and McKenna. Dan Rogers (3-40) got them both.

Runs became hard to come by as White (2-36), Fahad Ali (2-16) in particular and Nikeal Patel (3-30) wheeled away.

Bits and pieces – Woolnough with 13, Harrison Linnitt with 17 – were not enough to keep the chase alive and T&S were all out for 154 with more than 20 overs to go.

YELVERTON lacked the firepower to prevent Kingsbridge chasing 157 to win with more than 16 overs to go at the Butts.

Ben Grove (28 and Martin Goff (39no) had the only significant scores other than extras (28) in Yelverton’s all-out total of 156.

Freddie Weir (4-28) led the Kingsbridge bowling effort, aided and abetted by Neal Peach (2-36) and Bhanu de Silva, who bowled nine overs for just 17 runs scored off him.

James Westlake (44) and Richard Carr (22) gave Kingsbridge a 63-run start. Freddie Ford (35no), Adi Maxwell (18) and Joe Carey (21no) completed the chase with the minimum of fuss.

STOKE Gabriel are up to fifth in the C West table following a four-wicket win over derby rivals Paignton 2ndXI.

Rio Koyikkara’s encouraging season continued with a top score of 51 for Paignton in an all-out total of 160. His 45-run stand with skipper Steve George was as good as it got for Paignton in an otherwise modest set of scores.

Jack Tolley (3-26) pipped Isaac Withington (2-13) and Kyle Lardner (2-29) in the bowling stats. Chris Harrison bowled nine overs for just 24 runs given away.

Stoke’s reply began badly – they were 15 for two – but Liam Mair with 28 against his former club and Harrison (19) made a dent in the deficit.

Tolley (22), Isaac Mapima (20) and Jake Robinson (38no) took Stoke the rest of the way.

Mike Pedley (2-24) and Rory Medlock (2-19) made Stoke work hard for their runs at times.

SOUTH Devon’s struggle for survival in the C Division West became that little bit tougher following a seven-wicket stuffing at Ashburton.

That’s 10 defeats in 11 starts now for South Devon, who are 29 points shy of safety at the foot of the table.South Devon's Mark Andrews

The team South Devon have to get ahead of is Kingsbridge, who visit Marsh Road this Saturday. Anything other than a win will leave South Devon 40-plus points adrift and running out of time to do anything about it.

South Devon could not have wished for a much better start against Asburton as openers James Allen (53) and Mark Andrews (62) put on 124 before Aditya More (3-22) broke them up.

At 155 for two South Devon were still looking good, but the demise of Noah Rider was the signal for a batting collapse of epic proportions.

Eight wickets tumbled for just 21 runs scored as Steve Edmonds (3-31) and Matt Churchill (3-28) scythed down the batting.

Ashburton went from 48 for none to 57 for three in reply with Lloyd White among the casualties – and at that point juncture South Devon were still in the game.

A partnership of 120 unbroken between  Toby Pascoe (34no) and More (62no) sped Ashburton to victory with more than 14 overs to spare.
