Sidmouth rein in Plymouth after Hagan-Burt century puts city side in sight of victory | 'Once Codi Yusuf dismissed Hagan-Burt we turned the screw' – Luke Bess

Sidmouth

PLYMOUTH had victory in sight against Sidmouth at Mount Wise, only to have it snatched from their grasp.

Forty overs in to their 50-over allocation the city side were 225 for five chasing 286 to win with Jerome Bossr on 46 not out and looking in good nick.

Opener Joe Hagan-Burt had primed the chase with a pacy 107 off 97 balls – 13 fours, three sixes – and with Ollie Parsons making 44 Plymouth seemed in control at 200 for two.

All three have played match-winning innings for Plymouth this season.

Taylor Ingham-Hill accounted for Goldsby-West and Lojszczyk in the same over to end Plymouth’s hopes once and for all.

Stein was the last man out for Plymouth with the score on 250, which handed Sidmouth a 35-run win that takes them up to fourth in the table.

Sidmouth spinner Ingham-Hill showed why he is on the Devon radar with a four-for 41 haul and there were two wickets each for Jordan Fowler and Dylan Hurst.

Sidmouth’s total of 285 for nine was compiled courtesy of a consistent effort from the top six batters, all of whom got into double figures.

Opener Isaac Thomas was third out on 98 having scored 61. Skipper Luke Bess chipped in 37 and Codi Yusuf had 36 as Sidmouth reached 183 for five with 10 overs to go.

Hurst cut loose in the last 10 overs on his way to 77 off 56 balls as Sidmouth accelerated away. The penultimate over, bowled by Adam Talbott (2-39), went for 16 runs as the scoreboard whizzed round.

Luke Bess, the Sidmouth captain, said there was more to winning the game than a couple of eye-catching performances.

“There were contributions throughout the order with the bat, finished really well by Dylan Hurst and his 360-degree hitting, whether deliberate or not,” said Bess.

“It's the third time this season we have been defending a score and a team have come out flying.

"A couple of missed chances looked like they were going to hurt us, but we managed to stick in there and once Codi dismissed Hagan-Burt we turned the screw.

“Taylor Ingham Hill bowled really well and deserved his four wickets to go with a very good catch to dismiss Bossr that effectively put the contest to bed.”

Goldsby-West, the Plymouth captain, said it was annoying to get into a winning position then see the game slip away.

“We put ourselves in a great position to chase the runs, but didn't manage to see it over the line,” said Goldsby-West.

“Special mention for JHB who was outstanding at the top of the order with some brutal hitting to bring up his first 100 of the season.

“We just needed one of our set batmen to bat through the overs.”

“Credit to Sidmouth: they played all aspects of the game five to ten per cent better than we did.”

Goldsby-West added: “And a big thank you for the donation Luke and his team left behind for George Stephenson the YLVC charity.”
