Lustleigh aiming to retain Brockman Cup in Friday night final

Bovey Tracey

LUSTLEIGH will be aiming to keep a firm grip on the Brockman Cup when they face Bovey Tracey 3rd XI at Torquay on Friday night (6pm) in the final of the Valeport-sponsored competition.

Lustleigh won the cup for the seventh time last season when they cruised to a six-wicket win over Paignton in the final. To reach this season’s final they had to overcome Stoke Gabriel, Brixham and Torquay 2nd XI in the semi-final.

The two-wicket win over Torquay was edge-of-the-seat stuff after a batting collapse on the chase. Lustleigh appeared to be coasting into the final when they were 101 for three chasing 128 to win. But it was a different story at 119 for eight after a nine-ball going over from Ian Baker (4-25).

Shaun Wright and Dave Saxton got Lustleigh over the line after a struggle.

Bovey Tracey accounted for Barton by 27 runs in the first round, Ashburton by 14 runs in the last eight and Babbacombe by 31 runs at the semi-final stage. Opener Jake Pascoe had been in impressive form for Bovey with scores of 70, 23 and 73 on the way to the final.

Angela Glendenning, a grand-daughter of competition founder W S Brockman, is travelling down from her home in Worcester to present the solid silver trophy bearing the family name.

Charles Quartley from Valeport will be at the match to choose the man of the match.
