Never been a night like it in the Brockman Cup
THERE’S never been a night like it in the Brockman Cup, which is 83 years old this season and still going strong.
Only six centuries have been scored in the 20-over evening competition in the thousands of matches played since 1933.
So for two to be scored on the same night really was remarkable!
Crash! South Devon opener Mark Andrews reached 50 off 38 balls against his former club, Chelston & Kingskerswell.
Bang! Andrews reached his ton in another 20 balls before he was stumped by Nick Guest looking to add to his tally of 11 fours and five sixes.
Wallop! Over at the Hazeldown Oval, Shaldon opener Joe Wilcox, a 17-year-old pupil at Torquay Boys’ Grammar School, lashed 116 against Paignton.
Wilcox clearly likes to put bat to ball as his recent run of scores is 85, 101, 3no, 4, 54 and 116.
For the record the previous Brockman Cup centurions were the late Ray Haydock,(1978) , former Torquay United footballer Dave Smith (1982), Chris Sleep (2007), Ben Robinson (2011), Toby Codd (2014) and Dan Wolf (2015).
South Devon scored 160 for five in their 20 overs, sent on their way by Andrews and James Allen (17) with a stand of 70 for the first wicket.
Considering some of the carnage going on, Andy Lewis’s three for 26 wasn’t a bad bowling effort.
Chelston & Kingkerswell had a real go at knocking off the runs – and while Chris Harrison was making a rapid 86 off 42 balls they looked like getting them.
Bringing on the spinners slowed things down and when Rob Stephens (3-15) bowled Harrison the game turned South Devon’s way.
Matt Hammett (2-11) and Allen (1-10) got the break on and with a couple of run-outs thrown in C&KK lost six wickets for 17 runs on their way to 143 all out.
Paignton posted an impressive 177 for three at Shaldon – veteran Jason Woodcock (70) and youngster Harry Ward (55) both making half-centuries.
Wilcox carried his bat through the 13.3 overs it took Shaldon to polish off the target.
South Devon 160-5 (M Andrews 105, J Allen 17; A Lewis 3-26), Chelston & KK 141 (C Harrison 86, J Hurrell 2-15; R Stephens 3-15, M Hammett 2-110. South Devon bt C&KK by 17 runs.
Paignton 177-3 (J Woodcock 70, H Ward 55, P North 21no), Shaldon 178-6 (J Wilcox 116no). Shaldon bt Paignton by 4 wkts.
