George Greenway – England

ENGLAND captain George Greenway got back home to Exmouth earlier this week after leading his side to an historic victory over Australia in an Ashes series.

Greenway skippers the England Deaf XI and the series was an eight-game white-ball series played in Brisbane. Paignton’s Stephen George was also a member of the team.

England had not won an Ashes series against the Aussie for 30 years – home or away!

Such was England’s domination of the series – five T20s and three one-day games – they won it with a game to spare thanks to a crushing eight-wicket win over the Aussies.

Greenway’s task was made harder by an outbreak of Covid in the camp, that affected selection.

Australia won early on in a T20 decided in a super over, but after that it was England who were in the driving seat.

Said Greenway: “I’m so proud of all the players and so thankful to all the support staff who’ve really looked after us, especially through Covid.

“It was a huge team effort and a massive achievement for us. A few of us are quite emotional. There were  a couple of mornings when I wasn’t been able to eat because of nerves.

“I am so thrilled with the way we fought back from that disappointment losing the T20 super-over to come back and dominate.”
