Another ton for Hayter (pictured) has Bideford captain cooing | 'Back-to-back B Division tons at just 18 years old – it is crazy how good this lad is' – Tom Brend

At it again! Bideford

BIDEFORD opener James Hayter lashed a second successive league century as his side strode to a four-wicket win over Bovey Tracey 2nd XI.

The visitors probably felt their 45-over total of 284 for five would be a challenging one. It wasn’t.

Hayter followed his first-day century at Plymstock with 104 off 103 balls as Bideford chased the runs down with an over to spare.

That’s two wins on the spin now for Bideford, who sit second in the B Division table behind early leaders Ipplepen.

Ed Foreman (39) and Harry Mount (54) gave Bovey a 67-run start that Mount and Sam Harvey inflated to 163 for two,

After Harvey departed for 95 a combination of Ben Steer (19), Dan Green (37) and Bradley Causey took the Bovey tally to 284.

Five bowlers – including Hayter – took one wicket each.

Hayter lost opening partner and captain Tom Brend with 23 on the board. That was the only Bovey breakthrough until Bideford were well past 200.

Hayter and Ollie Hannam (86) took a 188-run bite out of the deficit. Alex Hannam (26no) got Bideford home and dry with an over to go.

Brend said Bovey pushed his side all the way to the end.

Referring specifically to Hayter, the Bideford captain said: “Back-to-back B Division tons at just 18 years old – it is crazy how good this lad is!

“James batted superbly with Oliver Hannam, who yet again played a classy hand and set the platform.

“Alex Hannam settled the nerves with an impressive display of hitting to get us over the line.

“We bowled well and were unlucky for the most part on what was a very batsman friendly surface.”

SAM Wakeham unleashed a brutal assault on Chudleigh’s bowling to help Ipplepen to a 127-run win that keeps them on top of the B Division.

Ipplepen were cruising along at a steady rate before Wakeham went in at 174 for three and started to butcher the bowling.

Butchered! What Sam Wakeham did to the Chudleigh bowlingDuring a 33-ball stay in the middle Wakeham smashed six fours and seven sixes on the way to rapid 82.

And that was after Marcus Gadie (20), Gareth Penrice (90) and Neil Hancock (33) had already had a go at the bowling.

Pens totalled 287 for six in their 45 overs then dismissed Chudleigh for 160 in reply.

No one made more than veteran opener Paul Windsor-Horne (32) for Chudleigh, who were spun out by Ashley Harvey’s (5-29) five-wicket haul. If Harvey did not get the odds were fellow spinner Adam Bryce (3-24) would.

One a day Chudleigh won’t want reminding of their last five wickets fell for just five runs scored.

Simon Tapley, the Ipplepen team manager, said Wakeham may have hogged the limelight but there was more to winning the game than his pyrotechnics.

“Gareth Penrice batted superbly for 90 and added a further 73 with Neil Hancock,” said Tapley.

“We scored 153 off the last 15 overs and Sam Wakeham provided the fireworks, which included four sixes in a row off George House.

“Despite bowling 44 wides in 39 overs, most of the bowlers bowled tightly. The spin twins Harvey and Bryce did the damage.”

Will Heather, the Chudleigh captain, said: “Simply put, we were second best and outplayed by a better side.

It was a difficult week due to availability issues and I was glad to see the other side of it.

“We lacked discipline in most areas and dropped six or seven catches, which would have made a big difference.

“Penrice batted well for them and when you come across Wakeham in that mood, and with that level of destruction, there is little you can do to stop him.

“Our openers batted really well and started off well, but we were overpowered in the end.

“I am proud of the lads for the togetherness they showed and their attitudes throughout.”
