BOVEY Tracey captain Lewis Hammett can’t wait to see Afghan Test batsman Munir Ahmad Kakar at the crease in the Tolchards DCL Premier Division.

The 26-year-old keeper-batter arrived in the UK last week and got a couple of friendlies under his belt over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Hammett wasn’t around to see Munir make 31 against Paignton or a single against touring side Outwood as he was enjoying his stag weekend.

But the Afghan’s reputation – he averages fractionally either side of 50 in First Class and List A cricket –has gone ahead of him.

Will Christophers – worth a look for Devon says HammettSaid Hammett: “It will be exciting to see Munir Kakar get into the season and I have high hopes for him.

“Munir is a consistent run scorer and I think he could be successful during his time here.”

Bovey were a respectable fourth in the Premier table last season and Hammett is unwilling to accept anything less this term.

“Fourth was around where we should have been last season and we will be looking to push top four again,” he said.

“Although Sandford and Heathcoat will be the early favourites, I feel our divisin is open and everyone is going to beat everyone.”

Hammett has a clear view of what Bovey have to do this season to challenge for anything better than the top four.

“Our bowling has to improve consistently and we have to bowl to a plan,” said Hammett.

“When we bat we need to score consistently. As there are guys in the top six or seven capable of scoring 400-plus runs we can improve that aspect of our game.

Bovey have signed Jake Pascoe from Ashburton, Ed Foreman from Chudleigh and Harry Mount from Chagford during the off-season.

Hammett has cast his eye around the dressing room and likes what he sees.

“Last season our talented young players started to step-up, but there is lot more to come from them,” said Hammett.

“Will Christophers was brilliant with the ball and I would not be surprised if Devon aren't looking at him for one-dayers.

“We can still call on the experience of the Bradley brothers and Ryan Bougourd, who still show the levels needed.”

Bovey’s  first game of the 2022 season is away to North Dveon.
