Reports from correspondents: Lewdown triumph over Tavvy in derby date

Marcus West - top scored for Ashburton in the win over South Devon

LEWDOWN defeated Tavistock 2ndXI by 10 runs in the E West derby clash at the Ring.

Lewdown’s prospects looked far from rosy after they were skittled out for 117.

Keith Maynard went in at 13 for two after a double strike from Tavvy’s Jack Bellamy (2-23) and made a patient 40 to hold the innings together after a fashion.

While Maynard was shoring up his end, Tavvy’s leg-spinner Will Scott-Munden was causing havoc at the other on his way to a six-for-26 haul.

Maynard went down at 91 for five and after that only Ted Kenyon (16) made it into double figures as Lewdown were bowled out in the 25thover.

How Tavistock managed to lose after openers Marc Lewis (26) and Brett Thomas (21) gave them a solid start is something of a puzzle Just like Lewdown they were 90 for four at one stage.

Scott-Munden (17) and John McGahey (10) kept the board ticking over, although wickets had been falling to the Williams brothers, Harry (2-36) and Jack (2-22).

Charlie Hughes (3-15) got into the Tavvy middle order, then Adam Creasey wiped out the tail with three wickets for two runs. No one in the bottom half of the Tavistock order made more than five on a day skipper Lewis will want to forget.

SOUTH Devon 2nd XI’s late push for promotion out of the F Division West stalled when Ashburton 2nd XI defeated them by 10 runs at Marsh Road.

Marcus West (76no) and Martin Causey (60no) were the men of the moment for Ashburton as they recovered from a slow start to reach 187 for three.

Causey and West shared an unbroken stand of 139. South Devon run getter Ryan Maunder

South Devon seamer Mike Smith was virtually unplayable at times by the Ashes batters. He only conceded six runs from the eight overs he bowled.

Shaun Taylor, another old warhorse, had an economy rate of 2.75 runs across his eight overs.

South Devon opener Ryan Maunder (74) took the home side’s chase to 150 for two with capable support from Morgan (31) and Louis (23) Hargreaves.

First-team calls denuded the side’s middle order and the gaps showed when the chase got close to the end.

Nial Kemp’s eight overs for 18 runs helped keep South Devon behind the clock and they closed on 177 for five.

A rueful Matt Kitto, the South Devon 2nd XI captain, said: “It was a good effort but we weren't quite good enough in certain areas.

“Mike and Shaun were excellent, bowling eight maidens in the first 20, but we lost a bit of control as the innings went on.

“Ryan and Morgan gave us a great start, but we lacked the depth we needed as wickets started to fall.”
