HOLDERS Ipplepen consigned South Devon 2ndXI to an early exit from the Brockman Cup with a 33-run win in a delayed first-round tie, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.

Although Pens’ opener Adam Peters missed out with the bat – he came and went in just three balls from Josh Hammett – Pens middle order all reached double figures as the total advanced to 128 for nine in 20 overs.

Dave Harris made 15 against the club where he was a colt and shared in stands of 38 with veteran Jeff Heath (23) and 22 with Matt Quartley (12).

Quartley, whose Valeport marine engineering business sponsors the Brockman Cup, was fourth out on 62 after a double strike from Ali Wright (3-16) got South Devon back in the game.

Will Castleton (19) and Dom Durman (21) got Ipplepen going again and a brisk 14 not out at the end by George Tapley rounded off the scoring.

Wright was easily the pick of the South Devon bowlers. Lahiru Samaradivakara (2-23) went for below a run a ball and Hammett (3-32) collected a couple of wickets in his second spell.

South Devon got just the start they did not want as Tapley (3-9) and the experienced Paul Thomas (2-7) reduced them to seven for four inside five overs. Losing Kalen Warne and Wright two balls apart to Tapley did not help.

Paul Hooper (14) and captain Richard Beaumont, who made 50 against his former club, opened the game up again during a fifth-wicket stand of 42. Harry Lewis (0-44) took some punishment once Beaumont got going.

Beaumont was sixth out at 72 and with his demise South Devon’s prospects faded.

Durman (4-9) got into the lower order and South Devon subsided to 95 all out with three balls to go.
